Legislator Calls for Collective Effort to Guard Public Assets

Jakarta City Council Commission D Chairwoman, Yuke Yurike is asking Jakartans to step up to the plate and help prevent the theft of streetlight parts and bridge flooring.

These facilities belong to all of us

"These facilities belong to all of us. Safety and comfort are at stake, so let’s watch each other's backs and protect our public amenities from vandalism and theft," she expressed, Thursday (1/29).

To stop thieves in their tracks, Jakarta is redesigning its footbridges with low-value materials like pressed wood.

"We're making sure even the smallest parts aren't worth the effort to steal," she stated.

Still, better design isn't a cure-all. To truly protect our public spaces, we need both tight security and residents to step up and report suspicious activity.

She is also pushing for a united front between the city government and residents, including the expansion of security camera networks. She suggested that areas currently lacking surveillance should be prioritized for immediate installation.

"It all boils down to supervision. We need residents to help us keep watch and sound the alarm if they see anything out of the ordinary," Yurike added.
